Eastern Greene Takes 1-0 Record on Road to Face North Knox

BICKNELL, Ind. — Eastern Greene will look to build on an impressive opening-night performance Friday when the Thunderbirds travel to North Knox for an early Southwest Conference matchup.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, August 28, with Eastern Greene entering at 1-0 and North Knox looking for its first victory at 0-1. Eastern Greene opened with a 41-12 victory over Pike Central, while North Knox suffered a 41-7 loss to Sullivan.

Eastern Greene couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the 2026 season.

After winning only two games a year ago, the Thunderbirds exploded for 41 points against Pike Central in Week One. Eastern Greene enters Friday having already scored more than twice its per-game average from last season.

A major reason for the turnaround was the performance of sophomore quarterback Saxton Pennycuff.

Pennycuff completed 10 passes for 201 yards and five touchdowns in the victory over Pike Central. After gaining valuable varsity experience as a freshman, Pennycuff’s Week One performance provides an early indication that the Eastern Greene passing attack could be significantly more dangerous this fall.

The Thunderbirds will now try to prove they can duplicate that offensive success away from home.

Eastern Greene scored 41 points while allowing only 12 in its opener, giving the Thunderbirds plenty of momentum entering their first road test.

North Knox finds itself on the other side of the equation.

The Warriors opened their season at home against Sullivan and fell 41-7. Sullivan entered the season with high expectations and wasted little time demonstrating why, handing North Knox a difficult opening-night defeat.

Now the Warriors get an opportunity to respond at home.

North Knox has several experienced skill players back from last season, including senior Camden McCory, senior Will Arnold and senior receiver Tyler Clark.

Those players were among North Knox’s statistical leaders during the 2025 season. McCory averaged 65 rushing yards per game, while Arnold averaged nearly 37. Clark led the Warriors’ receiving attack at 78.5 yards per game.

Getting that group involved will be important against an Eastern Greene defense that surrendered only 12 points in Week One.

For North Knox, establishing the running game could be especially important. If the Warriors can use McCory and Arnold to control possession, they can keep Pennycuff and Eastern Greene’s suddenly explosive offense on the sideline.

There should be no shortage of motivation for the Thunderbirds.

North Knox dominated last year’s meeting between the two schools, defeating Eastern Greene 53-13 in Bloomfield.

Friday gives Eastern Greene a chance to show just how much has changed in a year.

The Thunderbirds enter this matchup with confidence after their 29-point Week One victory, while North Knox will be attempting to quickly put its season-opening loss behind it.

That creates an interesting early-season matchup: Can Eastern Greene carry its Week One offensive explosion onto the road, or can North Knox slow the Thunderbirds down and regain control of a series it dominated a year ago?

North Knox’s biggest concern may be preventing Pennycuff from getting comfortable.

Five touchdown passes in a season opener immediately gets the attention of the next opponent.

The Warriors need to create pressure and force Pennycuff to make decisions before Eastern Greene’s receivers can get downfield. If he has time in the pocket, the Thunderbirds showed against Pike Central that they can produce points quickly through the air.

Eastern Greene, meanwhile, shouldn’t overlook the North Knox running attack because of the Week One score.

McCory and Arnold give the Warriors experienced options in the backfield, and North Knox could attempt to shorten the game by controlling the football and limiting Eastern Greene’s possessions.

Eastern Greene enters Friday trying to keep its momentum rolling.

North Knox enters trying to create some.

For the Thunderbirds, a second consecutive convincing performance would provide additional evidence that the program has taken a significant step forward following last year’s 2-9 campaign.

For North Knox, it’s an opportunity to erase a disappointing opener and begin conference play with a victory.

And after North Knox’s 53-13 victory in last year’s meeting, Eastern Greene shouldn’t need much additional motivation when it arrives in Bicknell
